Yoga For Basketball Players
Many people write me and ask my opinion on several things. I apologize that I cannot answer all inquiries however today, I will accomodate the request if yoga was overrated or not. I personally feel yoga only has a place for an athlete or person who is healthy enough (joint wise) to be able to perform the necessary tasks. Anyone who is working through a sports injury does not receive my advice to implement yoga. There are much finer ways to learn flexibility, peace of mind, and breathing techniques. The advice I give my own students is to research forms of meditation and choose the one that best suites their personality. Meditation promotes the highest level of peace in my opinion and there are many forms of it. I have found that most yoga instructors swear by their techniques as being the be all end all. When I get that vibe, I close the door to these people. Noboby knows the be all end all info. Nobody. Six years ago I had a woman come into a class I was teaching, wait until the end and then go on to introduce herself. After the introduction she asked me what I knew of flexibility and meditation. Before I could finish, she was telling me how much more important her work was than what I knew or was doing. I am sure you can imagine how quickly she was escorted out of the teaching facility. There is no room for these people in my life and certainly shouldn't be any room for them in your life. Do your own research, find things that match your personality and then implement them progressively. You will see that this is sound advice.
